BG Series Glycol Chillers

Below-Freezing Process Loops, Indoor or Outdoor

BG covers Advantage's full glycol chiller line — both the indoor, mechanical-room models and the outdoor, weatherproof models, 36 part numbers in all. The one fact that matters more than any other spec on this page: every BG/BGD model is built to run a 25-30°F process fluid temperature with glycol in the loop, adjustable anywhere from 20°F up to 70°F. Pull the glycol out and 48°F becomes the practical floor — run colder than that on plain water and you're asking for a frozen evaporator, not a repair call. That's the real difference between this line and the plain-water MG (portable) and Titan/OACS (central) chillers built elsewhere on this site: same mechanical-room or outdoor-pad installation pattern, different fluid, different achievable temperature floor.

Indoor models (BC-1A through BG-30A, 15 part numbers, 1-30 HP) sit inside a mechanical room like an indoor water chiller, but every wetted surface — evaporator, pump, reservoir and piping — is rated for glycol service. Several of the larger frames (BGD-5A, BGD-7.5A and BGD-10A) are also offered with a 65-gallon reservoir option (the "-65G" suffix) for plants that need more standby fluid volume without adding a second tank.

Outdoor models (21 part numbers, 2-120 HP) split into two real construction families. The smaller NEMA 4 weatherproof units (BG/BGD-xA-N4, 2-10 HP) are the direct outdoor counterpart of the smaller indoor frames — same compressor and refrigerant platform, a weatherproof cabinet in place of the indoor enclosure. For higher outdoor capacities, Advantage adapts its OACS central chiller platform for glycol duty (the OACS-xxS/xxD-...-BC part numbers, 15-120 HP) — same weatherproof frame, pump and reservoir architecture as the standalone water-cooled OACS line sold elsewhere on this site, but configured, charged and controlled to hold 25-30°F on a water-and-glycol mixture rather than plain chilled water. Don't spec an OACS-BC model's service or fluid needs off the standalone OACS chiller's documentation — the fluid and duty are genuinely different, even where the steel is the same.

A few of the larger tandem-compressor outdoor models (OACS-40S/50S/80D-BC) list a single compressor's horsepower on their spec sheet rather than the combined total the model number implies — we've published exactly what Advantage's own pages state, flagged inline, rather than doing the multiplication ourselves and presenting a number that isn't on their documentation. Shipping weight also isn't published for the six smaller NEMA 4 outdoor units (BG/BGD-2A through 10A-N4) — that field is simply omitted on those six PN pages rather than estimated.

BG glycol chiller serving a below-freezing glycol loop to a jacketed process tank

Glycol Changes the Whole Loop, Not Just the Fluid

Swapping plain water for a glycol mixture doesn't just protect against freezing — it changes pump sizing (glycol is more viscous and moves less efficiently through the same pump curve), evaporator selection, and how cold the loop can actually run. That's why BG/BGD chillers aren't MG or Titan units with glycol poured in after the fact; the evaporator, pump and controls are matched to the fluid from the factory.

If you're not sure whether your process actually needs glycol — or what concentration to run — tell us the target leaving fluid temperature and we'll confirm it. Call: 1-805-484-2992

Sizing a BG/BGD model comes down to three numbers: the required leaving fluid temperature (25-30°F standard, adjustable 20-70°F), the actual heat load in BTU/hr or tons, and whether the installation is indoor (mechanical room) or outdoor (weatherproof pad). Send us those and your process connection size and we'll confirm the exact model rather than having you back-calculate one from a spec table.

Common FAQs

Standard duty is 25°F to 30°F leaving fluid temperature with glycol in the loop, adjustable from 20°F up to 70°F depending on the model. Without glycol, treat 48°F as the practical floor — run colder than that on plain water and you risk a frozen evaporator.

Both share the same compressor and refrigerant platform. The "-N4" suffix marks a NEMA 4 weatherproof cabinet built to sit outside year-round in place of the standard indoor enclosure — the core chiller inside is the same design.

They share the same underlying weatherproof platform, but the OACS-BC units are configured, charged and controlled specifically for glycol duty at 25-30°F on a water-and-glycol mixture — different fluid, different setpoints and controls than the plain-water OACS chiller sold elsewhere on this site. Don't plan service or fluid changes off the standalone OACS documentation.

If your process needs a leaving fluid temperature at or below roughly 48°F, or the unit itself will see freezing ambient temperatures, you need glycol. Above that, a plain-water MG (portable) or Titan/OACS (central) chiller from elsewhere on this site is usually the simpler, lower-maintenance choice. Tell us your target temperature and we'll confirm which line fits.

For the standard 25°F leaving fluid temperature, Advantage specifies a 30-35% inhibited propylene glycol mix. The rule behind that number is a freeze point about 25°F below the lowest setpoint; on outdoor N4 units, protect to the lowest expected ambient instead if that is colder. Check the loop regularly with a refractometer. Water evaporates, so topping off with premix slowly raises the concentration, while making up spills with plain water dilutes it toward freezing the evaporator. Never use automotive antifreeze; its silicate inhibitors gel on heat transfer surfaces.

An indoor Advantage BG rejects 25-35% more heat into the room than it removes from the process, about 15,000 BTU/hr for every 12,000 BTU/hr of cooling, and moves roughly 1,000 cfm per horsepower. Give it at least 4 ft at the air intake and 6 ft at the exhaust, in a ventilated space where entering air stays between 60°F and 95°F. Fan-condenser models cannot be ducted. Blower models can duct their exhaust outdoors, sized at rated cfm and 0.90 in. of water static pressure, and need a damper assembly where intake air will fall below 60°F.

Advantage's N4 units are rated for entering air from -20°F to 95°F. Allow 4 ft at the air intake and 10 ft at the exhaust. With vertical discharge, keep all sides 4 ft from walls; inside three walls, the top of the unit must be level with or above the walls and clearance grows to 8 ft. Space multiple units 8 ft apart side by side or 3 ft end to end, and never let one unit's discharge feed another's intake. Fences or louvers need 80% free area and 4 ft clearance, and must not be taller than the unit. A low-restriction MERV 2-3 filter keeps debris off the coil.
